How you do anything is how you do everything

ree

The other day I had a moment that really helped me understand a lesson I’ve heard from my dad many times before. I was driving with my permit on the way to our shop. As I got ready to take a left turn, a car passed in the lane next to me, and two more were further back. I should’ve made the turn, but I hesitated. I actually had plenty of time, but I waited, letting both cars go by. After that, I started second-guessing myself, even with parking. I pulled too far forward, because I felt like my parking job wasn’t good enough. My dad let me know exactly how he felt—using some of his favorite four-letter words—but he also kept repeating a line I’ve heard him say before: “How you do anything is how you do everything.” But after that instance it finally clicked. That one hesitation on the turn carried over into how I parked. One small decision changed the way I made my next decision. It made me think about baseball. If I hesitate at the plate, or second-guess a throw on the field, that same doubt can follow me into the next play. This is instance has helped me in learning to trust myself and do everything with confidence.
